Frida Kahlo For Frida, The first thing I had to do was section up our paper into 2'x2' squares. I then had to work with the grid and sketch out where everything was going to go. Every single square had to have a different pattern and with that I used shading paints and patterns in her clothes. This was the final product.
During this project I really enjoyed getting to work with the paints, since that is my preferred medium. I think for next time I would spend more time on the blue background and the patterns I placed in each square. I would also spend more time finding similar skin tones to use for her. |
Sugar Skull Mold This was a group project and I worked with my friends Nikkia Jaques and Chaise Brown. The very first things we did were grease the sugar skull mold and start placing the plaster strips onto the mold. Once we had 3 or 4 layers of plaster on the skull we let that dry and then we sanded it down so that it would be smoother. We spray painted it white to have a nice blank surface and we coated it around 2 times. After that we started painting the skull using sun set palette colors as you can see. We then hot glued the roses into the eyes and beads down by the chin to add some nice textures.
I definitely loved working as a group with my friends. The whole project was a lot of fun and something I enjoyed on another level because sugar skulls are an important part of my heritage. If I could change anything it would be using actual plaster and not plaster strips to have a smoother surface to work with. |
Multimedia Project, sugar skull self portrait. This project was definitely challenging for me because I couldn't use paints alone in the piece. I had to use a grid to get all of my facial features in the right place. I used paints on most of this, for the background I used magazines and glued them down. I also used color pencil, water color, and marker.
For this project I definitely should've not procrastinated during my class time. This is not my best work, for sure. I wish that I had more texture but I can only learn from this! |
Salvador Dali Inspired; Floating Through Space. For this piece, the first step was researching the amazing Salvador Dali. Looking through his work and using that as inspiration into what this would turn out to be. Then came the sketches. I personally love really "trippy" and weird art. It's super intriguing and that's why I had so much fun doing it. I used oil pastels through the whole thing. I love the way that they blend out together.
I had an amazing time finishing this and yeah there were moments when I was frustrated because things weren't coming out how I wanted them to but it all came together at the end and I'm extremely proud. I would definitely give myself time to try out different oil pastel methods on scrap paper but over all, I enjoyed this last project very, very much. |
Four way Perspective; Metamorphosis Unfortunately, this piece is not as well done as I know it could've been. I didn't try to make this piece a great one, and for that, I won't spend much time on it.
One of the things that I had to do was separate out four sections, one for each stage of a caterpillars transformation into a beautiful butterfly. I didn't like my work with this piece, but I will try over the summer to keep the same exact concept, except ad more of an artististic feel to the entire thing. |

Furniture Project; Inspired by Mexico This project, this piece, for me was one of the best one's. I loved how much thought and how much time we had to complete this. It felt like I really could spend all of my time on it. To begin with the process I had to prime the entire box. Put down a white base coat so that all of my colors would pop on the box. I had to place down all of the small colors first before adding on the blue outline around the whole box. After that, I had to go in between the crevices to add either the gold, on the lid of the box, or the maroon brown on the front of the box. It was so much having the design already carved out in the box, all I had to do was paint.
This piece means a lot to me, because not only did I choose to represent my homeland but this box belonged to my grandmother and then my mother, so it meant a lot to be able to decorate a box that had been passed down to me. |
Visual Illusion; Thirst To begin with this final piece, I decided to paint on canvas instead of just paper. I began by drafting out where everything would go in pencil, I sketched onto the canvas where her head would be placed and how I wanted her to fade into just part of the cliff. Then I began to paint in all the parts that are gray. I added shadows onto the rocks and cliff side with a darker shade of gray. Then I stippled on moss colors to depict a woman's hair. I wanted the sky to be more of a tie-dye effect so I used a flat brush and used it in linear motions.
I absolutely loved this project, I just felt a little rushed, it being the last project and about a week to complete it. Overall though I really enjoyed myself. I love how we were able to paint whatever we wanted, it just had to include an illusion. I felt very free, which I enjoy when it comes to painting. |
